What is acupuncture and how does it work?

Acupuncture is a method of healing that is based on the natural laws influencing the movement of energy in the body.  Qi (pronounced chee) is the life force that invigorates, sustains and protects us.  It flows throughout the body along meridian channels.  When it is flowing smoothly, there is little to no upset, pain or disease.  Illnesses can arise when this energy gets blocked or out of balance.  When acupuncture needles are inserted into specific points, these blockages can be dissolved and balance restored.

What does acupuncture treat?

Does acupuncture hurt?

Some patients report feeling the initial sensation of a needle being inserted and others report not feeling the needles at all.  When a meridian is blocked and a needle is inserted, energy is being awoken and is beginning to move freely again and it can be very powerful!

The needles are very thin, disposable, and sterile.  Sometimes the needles are left in, other times they are inserted and then removed immediately.  Most report that the ultimate result is deeply relaxing and healing.

About Dina

Dina has been an acupuncture patient since she was 7 years old and is a firm believer in the healing powers of acupuncture for both physical and emotional pain or distress.  Prior to earning her Masters of Acupuncture from the Tai Sophia Institute, Dina graduated from the University of Maryland with her Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education.

Dina offers a variety of treatment modalities ranging from 5 Element Acupuncture to Dr. Tung’s and Dr. Tan's methodology for treating pain and/or pain management. She is passionate about uniting the mind, body and spirit; healing the emotional aspect of a human being as well as the physical body. In her acupuncture practice, Dina has assisted her patients in overcoming such ailments as depression, addiction, anxiety, ADHD, fertility issues, PMS symptoms, weight issues, back pain, neck pain, and shoulder pain, just to name a few.

For Dina, practicing acupuncture is not work but a service to mankind and it brings her great joy each and every time she is afforded the opportunity to insert a needle into another human being.

How Often Do I Need to Come to Acupuncture?

Most people begin to notice results within 6-8 weeks, though many find that they are feeling better sooner.  For those first 6-8 weeks, it is recommended that the patient come once a week to get the best shift in Qi (energy).  Depending on the patients’ progress, treatments can then begin to be spaced out to bi-weekly or monthly appointments.
